NINA

Additional Foley – Walker and Editor

Nina Simone was a Juiliard level musician, civil rights activist, and jet-set soul singer. This is the story of her return to music and the dedicated manager who helped her find her way home.

Staring: Zoe Saldana, David Oyelowo, Mike Epps

My Perspective

STORY:

This biopic focuses on the relationship between Nina and her manager Clifton Henderson. Nina’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, has already publicly criticized the amorous twist the movie gives. She told RollingStone, “The movie is about a relationship between my mother and Clifton which never took place. They never had an amorous relationship.” I knew nothing about Nina Simone before working on this movie.  Despite any flaws it may have, NINA inspired me to do some digging into her life and what she did for the Civil Rights movement.

SOUND:

NINA underwent an ambitious re-edit late in its production cycle. I was hired to edit existing Foley to fit the new cut and to add sound where missing. Most of the time was spent on footsteps, but my favorite elements were the hand touches that brought realism and beauty to simple scenes. The project turn around was crazy fast. I am grateful for the coordinating work of Paulette Lifton at Oracle Post in Burbank. She is the pro who kept everything moving smoothly forward.
